My Rating: 6/10
In college, Catfish: The TV Show was my obsession. The way people would open up and trust complete strangers without even meeting them in real life was insane to me. When I was a kid, AIM was how my friends and I would communicate. And if my parents ever found out I was talking to anyone other than my school friends, I would be in so much trouble. It was drilled into me, probably even more so than not talking to strangers in real life, never talk to anyone you don't know online. Along with never giving out any of your bank details or opening any suspect emails. #iykyk.
So when I watched this show I just couldn't understand how someone could be so naive?! How could someone fall for this trap? How could they miss all the RED flags?! But over time,(and coming down off my high horse and stopping being a judgy biotch) I realized that we as humans, believe what want to believe, and for most of these young, lovesick people, all they wanted was to believe in love. So they went along with the "My camera is broken" and "I can't talk on the phone I'm too shy *cough* cough*", even though they knew in their gut something wasn't right. And when you watched the show you really hoped that the person on the side of the door was who they said they were. And in true MTV fashion, they would cut to a commercial break right before you found out The majority were not but every so often they would be and the show would hook you in again.
Last year I found Catfish: The Podcast where they've converted past episodes into a podcast format. And they are just as binge-worthy as the show. Some I can remember, many I hadn't heard before. Nev does a great job at describing the situation and people, setting up the perfect scene. While this isn't groundbreaking journalism, I listen to this podcast when I'm in the mood for something light. The episodes are short only around 45 minutes. It's not too heavy and each episode is its own, so you can listen to them in any order. It's kinda like a #comfort podcast. One you can have on while you do the laundry or dishes, and won't be upset if you miss half the episode and just listen to the end. Have you listened before? Are you a fan of the show? #bringmaxback. What say you?
