Let's get into one of my favorite podcasts! The one I will recommend over and over. The one ALL women should listen to, Something Was Wrong. This is a total binge-worthy podcast and there are already 17 seasons so you can fully immerse into this one. Each season tells a different story, with a few seasons having multiple stories within. Each season is told by a survivor, of manipulation, sexual assault, domestic abuse, or another form of trauma. The creator Tiffany Reese does an incredible job of allowing her guests to just talk. When you do hear her voice it's to reassure or validate what the guest is or was feeling. She does a fantastic job of creating a space that allows the guest to tell their story, how they want to. They will also bring on friends or family of the survivor, to share their experiences.

When I listened to the first episode back in 2020, I was instantly hooked. In the future, I might do a post about each season because I tell you, some are just absolutely jaw-dropping. And I would love to talk about each of them in depth. But back to season 1, I think what hooked me was that the woman who was sharing her story, was a 30-something, educated woman who was not someone that could be easily manipulated by anyone, let alone a man and yet she was. I think TV and books portray women who "get" themselves in these situations with men, as weak, naive, vulnerable, and easy to manipulate. And that's not a fair narrative we should be listening to.
A few years ago I read the book Talking to Strangers by Malcolm Gladwell, for book club. And the thing that stuck with me the most, what I can't forget, is that as humans we are wired to trust people at face value. Few people are "master manipulators", it's just we choose to believe them because why would they lie? And that's what is so important about this podcast is that there is no shame or nothing wrong with any of these survivors, the blame and fault lie solely with the abuser. They have worked out how easy it is for people to believe them, that if they say the right things and act a certain way, no alarm bells will sound. Yet, fortunately, the mask always slips and the bells start to fucking ring. And the only choice left is to get away. These survivors are brave for not only sharing their story but also having to relive it. Tiffany created this platform for survivors to get some sort of justice, even if it's only in other people joining in solidarity to say, "That was really fucked up and how can we help so this doesn't happen to someone else."
Have you listened? What was your favorite season? What say you?
