I get asked, usually by men, why I like true crime so much. Why do I choose to listen to murder podcasts? For a lot of men, they just can't understand it. Why do you want to listen to crimes, typically against women? The answer: because I want to know how to keep myself safe. What signs do I need to look out for and what important rules do I need to remember? Being a woman is not easy for many reasons but it is imperative that we do what we can to stay safe.
Most of us follow the basic rules: Don't be outside alone after dark, never run with both headphones in, ALWAYS be aware of your surroundings and it's better to be rude than nice. However, there is something comforting in having extra protection. Something that you hope you never have to use but feel better having with you. Here is a list of my top safety must-haves that I keep on me, in the car, and when I travel. Get them for yourself. Get them for your loved ones. It's always better to be safe and prepared than dead.
Top Must-Haves:
Birdie Safety Alarm. This alarm is LOUD! It is an easy travel size to fit on your key chain and comes in many beautiful colors. Having an alarm is essential to draw attention to yourself if you feel in danger. It also can take your attacker by surprise and give you a chance to get away.
2. Taser. I've had my Taser for nearly 10 years. I've never had to use them but I feel just a tad bit safer knowing I have it. They are easy to handle and are compact enough to fit in you in your purse. They are also easy to charge and most just plug into a normal outlet. I keep one on me and one in my car. Make sure you do a quick Google search to check if they are legal in your area and if they are get one!
3. Pepper Spray. This pepper spray is small and compact, easy to fit on your key ring. It has 25 bursts of spray, allowing you to spray multiple times. It also comes with free training videos with each purchase. Again, do a quick Google search to make sure they are legal in your area.
4. Door Stoppers. These are perfect for traveling. Just slip them under your door while you're in your room and you'll feel at ease. I love these because they also have an alarm, so if anyone attempts to come into your room you'll know.
These are my top must-haves. Do you have any others? Do you already own these? What say you?
