As a kid, I hated sleeping without a TV. Before I had a TV in my room (I know I was a very privileged kid) I would fall asleep on the couch and then when I would be woken up to go to my room I would be wide awake, unable to fall asleep in the agonizing silence. I remember staying at my grandparent's house and I could hear Law and Order from their room. If I could fall asleep while they still watched, peaceful night's sleep but if I was awake after they finished, terrible. Again, when I would spend summers with my aunt and she only had a small TV in her guest bedroom with a VCR, I would watch Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer the 1998 version on repeat. To be fair the music in that movie slaps.
For me it wasn't just about hearing noise it was also about what noise I was hearing. It couldn't be too loud or too abrupt. Calming but not infomercial sounds. As I got older it became the same shows on Netflix (Parks and Rec) or music. I couldn't watch anything that I would get invested in. Something I would not be able to stop watching. So then I switched to music but that too became problematic. I didn't always like the songs or liked them too much and would sing along. I often would read and that would make me sleepy but as soon as I closed the book I would be wide awake again.
This led me to look on Amazon Music for sleep sounds, nope I'm not a rain or white noise girly. Waves or fans? Definitely not, can't do it. But following the theme of reading what about someone reading a book to you? And there I found The Sleepy Bookshelf.
And holy shit did it change my life. Seriously you guys, the narrator Elizabeth, her voice is just so soothing. So basically she just reads books to you, in a very peaceful way. At the beginning of each new episode, she goes over the main points in the last episode so you don't feel like you missed much. Each book she chooses is easy and peaceful. And look, for me they are either books I've already read before or books I don't really care to read but are so good at putting me to sleep. I'm obsessed. On Amazon Music, you can set a timer to stop the podcast and literally, I'm asleep in 10 minutes. There are books like Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, and Winnie the Pooh. I can't stop recommending it enough! Every night I take a couple of melatonin, put on my sleep mask, and heel socks, snuggle up to my weighted elephant, and click play on The Sleepy Bookshelf. If you suffer from not being able to sleep or just want to try listening to something different at night, try it! Have you listened before? Do you want to? What say you?
